Most amateurs don't put any thought into their dink; the pros take the court geometry into consideration.

Here's the simple rule:

If you can't be aggressive on the dink → aim between your opponents' feet OR toward the center of the kitchen

Why? Because you're taking away their angles. If they try to speed the ball up, they have very few places to hurt you.

If you can be aggressive on the dink → go wide.

A wide dink pulls your opponent off the court, creates pressure, and opens up space for the next ball. As soon as you hit it, take a small step toward the middle and lean into the kitchen.

You're now in position to attack the pop-up that often comes next.
