Here's a 5.0+ Pickleball Concept That Completely Changed the Way I Defend Speed-Ups
One of the biggest differences between a 4.0 player and a 5.0+ player isn't just better execution; it's seeing the game differently.
Here's a perfect example.
Imagine you're in a cross-court dinking battle. You leave one dink just a little too high, and you immediately recognize that your opponent now has a chance to speed the ball up.
Most players instinctively slide toward the middle with their forehand, expecting the speed-up to come through the middle of the court.
Against most opponents, that might work.
Against a 5.0+ player, it actually creates a problem.
The moment you overcommit with your forehand, you expose your body. An experienced player sees that instantly and now has a huge target: your chest. Instead of simply hitting through the middle, they can "pick a spot" and speed the ball directly at your body, making it much more difficult to defend.

The better play is different.
The instant you realize you've left your dink a little too attackable, slide all the way to the middle with your backhand protecting your body.
Now you've taken away their best target.
If they attack your body, your backhand is already there. If they try to go to your forehand side, there's a good chance the ball sails wide because you've covered the middle properly.

This is one of those subtle adjustments that separates advanced players from everyone else.
At the 5.0+ level, players aren't just reacting to the ball—they're constantly reading their opponent's positioning and looking for small advantages. The faster you recognize when you've left a dink attackable and adjust your positioning, the more rallies you'll survive and the fewer easy speed-ups you'll give away.
It's a tiny adjustment that can make a huge difference in your defense.
