If you don’t have a two-handed backhand drive, good players will serve to it and pick on it all game.

This shot is primarily important on the return of serve, where being able to return aggressively off both wings will make it very hard for the opponent to hit a solid 3rd.

1. Coil BEFORE the ball gets to you

As soon as you recognize the ball coming to your backhand, unit turn and coil your hips.

Then explode through the ball on contact.

Remember: Power comes from the ground up, not from your arms.

Your legs and hips start the shot. Your arms finish it.

2. Keep your shoulders LEVEL

One of the biggest mistakes I see from amateur players is dipping the front shoulder.

Once that shoulder drops, controlling the ball becomes much harder.

Keep your shoulders level throughout the stroke.

Level shoulders = more consistent contact + better accuracy.

3. Let your non-dominant hand do the work

This is the SECRET to a great twoey.

Your non-dominant hand should do most of the work through contact and help create that snap and topspin.

A simple trick I use:

👉 Consciously grip tighter with your non-dominant hand.

This naturally forces that hand to take over instead of letting your dominant arm control the entire swing.

That topspin is what allows you to swing aggressively while still keeping the ball in the court.

  1. Coil

  2. Stay level

  3. Let the non-dominant hand WORK
